Respiratory Flashcards
Which opioid can also be used as an antitussive drug?
Butorphanol
Adverse effects of Butorphanol when used as a cough suppressant?
Respiratory suppression
Use for Trimeprazine + Prednisolone
(Temaril-P) anti-tussive and anti-pruritic
Mechanism of action of Albuterol
Acts as an agonist on β2 adrenergic receptors
Indicated effect of albuterol
Bronchodilator
Adverse effects of albuterol
Adrenergic effects
Mechanism of action of terbutaline
Agonist at β2 receptors
Adverse effects of terbutaline
Adrenergic effects
Mechanism of action of clenbuterol
Agonist activity at β1 more than β2
Contraindications of clenbuterol
Explicitly forbidden for use in cattle!
Why is epinephrine not commonly used for it’s respiratory effects?
Epi is non-specific, which means it will bind to adrenergic receptors throughout the body, not just in the lungs. So the patient will have an increase in adverse adrenergic effects
Theophylline mechanism of action
Inhibits phosphodiesterase in smooth muscle cells from causing bronchoconstriction
Contraindications of theophylline use
It has stimulant properties and risks of drug interactions. Not approved for use in veterinary medicine, all use is extra label
Mechanism of action of Tripelennamine
H1 blocker (antihistamine)
Indicated effect of Dopram
Stimulates ventilation
