Respiratory Flashcards
What is a Respiratory system?
Respiratory system transports oxygen throughout the body and getting rid of carbon dioxide
What is in the air and what are their percentages?
Carbon Dioxide 0.03%
Nitrogen 78%
Oxygen 20%
Argon 0.93%
How many times does a human being breath per minute?
15 times per minute
What are the Upper Respiratory Tract?
Nose
Nasal Cavity
Larynx (Voice Box)
Pharynx (Throat)
What are the functions of the Upper Respiratory Tract
Nose - Is made up of bone tissue (cartilage)
Nasal cavity - Helps to warm, humidifies and filter out air
Larynx(voice box) - Produce vocal sound n prevents food and foreign particles from entering into the lower respiratory tract or
Pharynx(Throat) - Muscular Pathway for the food and air to be transported to the stomach and lungs
What are the Lower Respiratory system
Trachea(Windpipe)
Bronchi
Alveolar Sacs(Air sacs)
Lungs
What are the functions for the Lower Respiratory Tract?
Trachea(Windpipe) - smooth muscles that carries air from the throat towards the lungs
Bronchi - 2 tube divided from the Trachea and are direct route to Alveolar Sacs(air sacs)
Alveoli (Air sacs) - they hold oxygen until blood the blood can exchange carbon dioxide to oxygen
Lungs - are main organs for respiratory system and they are coned shape
What is Pulmonary Ventilation and how does it work?
They are normally called breathing, the air moves into and out of the lungs as we breath the alveoli are continuously refreshed
What is external Respiration and how does it work?
Exchange gases between external environment with body respiratory organ. External respiratory are made between blood and alveoli
What is Respiratory Gas and how does it work?
Oxygen is transported throughout the body by haemoglobin and once the blood passed the systemic capillaries the carbon dioxide is transported through the lungs and breath out
How does Internal Respiratory System works?
Oxygen being removed from the red blood cells and Carbon dioxide moved into them
Types of body system that works with the Respiratory System?
Cardiovascular System Muscular system Bones Digestive system Lymphatic system
Functions of the body system that works with the respiratory system?
Cardiovascular System - consist of blood that is transport the respiratory gases
Bones - Enclose protecting the lungs and bronchi
Digestive system - provide nutrients needed
Lymphatic system - maintain blood volume
Muscular system - Diaphragm and intercostal muscle in the muscular system produce volume changes necessary for breathing
What are the effects of exercise on Respiratory system?
Provide greatest impacts both on oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide production compared to other types of exercise
What is the breathing pattern in exercise instruction?
Breathing should be done through mouth and nose throughout during exercises
What are the disease and disorders of Respiratory system?
Asthma
Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA)
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
What is Asthma?
Is a Chronic disease, inflammation of the breathing passaged throughout the lungs to be obstructed
What are the symptoms for Asthma?
Coughing Wheezing (Whistling sound) Shortness of breath Chest tightness Sneezing and runny nose Itchy and inflamed eyes
What is Exercise Induced Asthma (EIA)
Poor fitness health
What are the EIA symptoms that can start and last for a while?
Shortness of breath Tightness and pain in the chest Coughing Wheezing (Whistling) Unusual fatigue while exercising
What are the treatments for EIA?
They were recommended to take pre-treatment such as medication before exercise or strenuous activity
What are the recommended types of exercise for EIA?
Volleyball
Soccer
Walking
Basketball
What is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?
One of most disabling respiratory disorders
What are the common features for COPD?
Smoking
Coughing
