Respiration & Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process by which (green) plants use carbon dioxide, water and light energy in a series of chemical reactions to produce food (glucose) and oxygen (photo= light; synthesis+ to make)
Light energy
Light energy is provided by the sun
Carbon Dioxide
Plants obtain carbon dioxide (Co2) from the atmosphere.
Water
Plants obtain water from under the ground.
Chlorophyll
Green plants contain the pigment chlorophyll.
What is the simplified chemical reaction for photosynthesis?
(CO 2) + Chlorophyll
carbon dioxide + water —–> glucose (C 6 H 12 O 6) + oxygen
Light energy
What is the Gaseous Exchange?
The gaseous exchange is the process which plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen (The absorption and emission of gasses)
How does the gaseous exchange happen?
This happens through the stomata which are mainly found in the leaves, however can be found in other parts of a plant as well. Water is absorbed from the grounf through the root hairs of the plant.
Name the two groups of plants which do not have chlorophyll.
Saprophytes and Parasites.
What are Saprophytes?
Saprophytes are plants that survive on dead organic tissue
What are Parasites?
Parasitic plants are plants that survive on living organic tissue
