Respiration And Ventilation Flashcards
What is respiration ?
-respiration is the reason that we need food
-respiration is the process of releasing energy from food
Define larynx
-commonly referred to as the voice box and is located in the neck of animals
Define trachea
Commonly referred to as the wind pipe and connects the larynx to the lungs
Define rings of cartilage
Provide structural support to the trachea and bronchioles and prevent the, collapsing inwards
Define left bronchus
A passage way through which air passes, it connects the trachea and bronchioles
Define heart
A 4 chambered organ located between the lungs in the chest of mammals
Define thoracic diaphragm
A sheet of skeletal muscle that extends across the bottom of the rib cage, it is involved in ventilation of the lungs
Define bronchioles
Forms a passageway through which air passes, they connect the bronchus and alveoli
Define alveoli
Found in the lungs and there are thousands of these in the lungs and they increase the surface area in the lungs
Define pleural fluid
A fluid secreted by the pleural membrane, it reduces friction between the lungs and the ribcage during ventilation
Define pleural membrane
The membrane separates the rib cage from the lungs and secretes pleura, fluid
Define intercostal muscles
These are found between the ribs, they contract during ventilation of the lungs and pull the rib cage up and outwards
