Respiration (aerobic and anaerobic) Flashcards
Is respiration endothermic or exothermic?
Exothermic
Why is respiration exothermic?
It releases energy
What is aerobic respiration?
When glucose is reacted with oxygen gas
What does aerobic respiration produce?
Carbon dioxide and water, it also releases energy
How much energy does aerobic respiration release?
A lot
What is the energy we need called?
Cellular respiration
Why does aerobic respiration release so much energy?
Glucose molecule has been fully oxidised
What is the equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is anaerobic respiration used for in our bodies?
Muscle cells when there is a shortage of oxygen, they need a lot of energy for contraction.
Is oxygen required for anaerobic respiration?
No
What occurs during anaerobic respiration?
Glucose is converted to lactic acid
How much energy does anaerobic respiration release?
Much less energy, because oxidation of glucose is incomplete
What happens in plant and yeast cells when anaerobic respiration occurs?
Glucose is made into ethanol and carbon dioxide (also energy)
Why is anaerobic respiration useful for yeast?
It is referred to as fermentation when it occurs, this can be used for alcoholic drinks as ethanol is produced from this reaction
Why is anaerobic respiration also useful for bread?
Carbon dioxide from fermentation creates bubbles in dough, causing it to rise
