respiration Flashcards
1
Q
trachea
A
air passage to the lungs
2
Q
alveoli
A
tiny sacks in the lungs to allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to be exchanged
3
Q
bronchiole
A
runs through the lungs and has alveoli attached to the ends. this ensures that incoming air goes to all the alveoli
4
Q
ribs
A
protects the heart and the lungs
5
Q
intercostal muscles
A
connects the ribs together and allows the chest cavity to expand
6
Q
diaphragm
A
muscle that separates the chest and stomach and it controls inhalation and exhalation
7
Q
how do we get air into our lungs
A
- contract rib cage upward & outward
- lungs expand, air sucked in through nose & mouth
- diaphragm down, oxygen travels down the trachea to lungs
8
Q
alveoli adaption
A
- good blood supply
- large surface area
- thin walls, easy for diffusion
