Respiration Flashcards
Define respiration:
The process of transferring energy from glucose
What is the energy from respiration used for:
Respiring, contracting muscles to move, making larger molecules and keeping body temperature stable
Define metabolism:
All the chemical reactions occurring in an organism
What is aerobic respiration:
Respiration that requires oxygen
What are the equations for aerobic respiration:
Glucose + oxygen —> carbon dioxide + water
C(6)H(12)O(6) + 6O(2) —> 6CO(2) + 6H(2)O
What is anaerobic respiration:
Respiration that doesn’t require oxygen
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration:
Glucose —> lactic acid
Which type of respiration is more efficient and provides more energy:
Aerobic
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast:
Glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What is anaerobic respiration called in yeast:
Fermentation
When you exercise, you need more energy so you:
Respire more
In order to respire more, the body increases:
Heart rate, breathing rate and breath volume
What does lactic acid cause:
Pain such as cramp
What is an oxygen debt:
The amount of oxygen required to react with all the lactic acid (to produce carbon dioxide and water)
What is an alternative way of dealing with lactic acid (not reacting with oxygen):
It is transported to the liver by the blood, where it is converted back to glucose
