Respiration Flashcards
define Aerobic respiration
the conversion of glucose and oxygen into carbon dioxide and water to release energy
what is the chemical equation for aerobic respiration
glucose + oxygen →carbon dioxide + water
true or false: aerobic respiration doesn’t occur in white blood cells
false, it occurs in all cells except red blood cells
what are produced during aerobic respiration? which of these are waste?
energy is released as ATP, as well as carbon dioxide and water which are waste products
where in the cell does AEROBIC respiration occur?
the mitochondria
what is ATP used for?
- making cells
- contracting muscles
- warmth
what is the word equation for lactate fermentation
glucose→ lactic acid
where does lactate fermentation occur
in the cytoplasm
when does lactate fermentation occur
when your heart rate cant increase fast enough to meet the oxygen demand (oxygen debt)
what form of anaerobic respiration takes place in the body
lactate fermentation
why do athletes breathe heavily after a race
the body needs oxygen to react with the lactic acid and stop cramping
julia runs a race. would the concentration of lactic acid in her blood increase or decrease as the race went on? WHY?
it would increase. the body would be in oxygen debt so it needs to respire anaerobically. this would mean that lactic acid would be produced. sine there is no oxygen to get rid of it it builds up
where does alcoholic respiration occur
plants and microorganisms
what is the word equation for alcoholic respiration
glucose→ carbon dioxide + ethanol
what does the red blood cell do?
transports O2, contains haemoglobin
what component of blood helps with clotting
elatelets
What is the primary function of the lungs?
To facilitate gas exchange, primarily oxygen and carbon dioxide.
True or False: The lungs are part of the respiratory system.
True
What structure is responsible for the exchange of gases in the lungs?
Alveoli

A) 2
What is the role of the diaphragm in lung function?
It contracts and relaxes to facilitate breathing.
Fill in the blank: The trachea branches into two main ______ leading to the lungs.
bronchi
What is the primary gas exchanged in the alveoli?
Oxygen
What is the term for the tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs?
Alveoli
True or False: The lungs can expand and contract.
True
What is the function of the bronchial tubes?
To carry air to and from the lungs.
Fill in the blank: The ______ is another name for the windpipe
trachea
What is the function of the capillaries surrounding the alveoli?
To allow for the exchange of gases between blood and air.
True or False: The lungs are responsible for producing sound.
False
What is the effect of smoking on lung function?
It damages lung tissue and reduces respiratory efficiency.
Multiple Choice: What is the main purpose of the respiratory system?
A) Digestion
B) Gas exchange
C) Circulation
B) Gas exchange
