Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction that occurs in cells in all living organisms, releasing energy to be used for processes
What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?
glucose + oxygen —> water + carbon dioxide + ATP
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in humans?
glucose —> lactic acid
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in plants and yeast?
glucose —> ethanol + carbon dioxide
What are 2 differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration?
1) aerobic respiration releases energy slower than anaerobic respiration
2) aerobic respiration releases more energy due to complete glucose breakdown but anaerobic respiration releases less energy due to incomplete glucose breakdown
In what part of the cell does respiration take place?
Mitochondria
