Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration
the breaking down of food molecules ( glucose) to release the energy in them
Why must energy be released
all cells need it to function
when does it occur
all the time ( day and night)
Where does it occur
Inside every living cell
Where in the cell does resp occur
Mitochondria and cytosol
What is aerobic and anaerobic resp
- Occurs in the presence of O2
- Occurs in the absence of O2
What is the main role of enzymes
Speed up reaction ( the release of energy)
Give the word and chemical equation for respiration
- Glucose + Oxygen —-> Water + Carbon dioxide + Energy
- C6H12O6 + 6O2——-> 6H2O + 6CO2 + 38ATP
What are the 3 phases that aerobic resp
Glycolisis
Krebs cycle
oxidative phosphorlyation
What is anaerobic resp also known as
fermentation
how does anaerobic occur in plants and animals
Plants:
- Glucose is brokend into ethanol ( alcohol) and CO2 is released
- imp in bread making where yeast is kneaded into the dough, yeast enzyme brakes down starch into glucose and CO2 is released
- Alcoholic fermentation
- C6H12O6 ——-> CO2 + ETHANOL + 2ATP
Animals:
- Glucose is broken down into lactic acid ( by lactic acid fermentation)
- Lactic acid = paralysing effect on muscle cells, pain and fatigue; limited time period; till O2 debt passes
- Once O2 is available again lactic acid can undergo aerobic respiration
- C6H12O6 ——-> Lactic acid + 2ATP
Explain metabolism fully
- Chemical activity inside an organism
- 2 parts : anabolism; catabolism
- Anabolism = large complex molec formed from small molec
- Catabolism = large molec are broken down into smaller molec
