 Dyspnea – is breathing difficult?
 Apnea – has breathing stopped?
 Tachypnea – high resp rate - > 25 resps/min
 Bradypnea – low resp rate - < 10 resps/min
 Cheynes-stokes – Are there periods of labored
respirations followed by apnea?
 Rales – can you hear bubbling or rattling sounds
caused by mucus in the air passages?
 Wheezing – difficult breathing with a high
pitched whistling or sighing sound
 Cyanosis – bluish discoloration of the skin, lips,
and/or nail beds due to decreased O2 and
increased CO2 in the bloodstream
