Respiration Flashcards
What is respiration
Respiration is the breakdown of glucose into energy
Energy released is turned into a chemical called what
Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)
When the end phosphate of ATP breaks pff what is made
Adenosine diphosphate with an inorganic phosphate (ADP + Pi)
Respiration uses what
Enzymes
ATP and ADP + Pi cycle
ATP - energy released - ADP + Pi - energy required - back to ATP
Why does the body need energy
Muscle contraction Transmition of nerve impulses Cell division Protein synthesis Active transport
Stage one of aerobic respiration
Glycolysis occurs in the cytoplasm which doesnt require oxygen
Glucose is turned into pyruvate and 2ADP + Pi is turned into 2ATP
Stage two of aerobic respiration
Only occurs if oxygen is present in the mitochondria
Pryruvate is turned into carbon dioxide and lots of ATP is produced
Why do muscles and sperm have a high number of mitochondria
Because they require more energy
What is a respirometer used for
A respirometer is used to measure the rate of respiration
What is a control used for
Comparisson
What is fermentation
Fermentation involves the partial breakdown of glucose to release energy in the absence of oxygen
What happens in fermentation of animals
Glycolysis takes place as normal
Then the pryruvate turns into lactate and when oxygen becomes available the lactate turns back into pyruvate
What happens in fermentation in plant and yeast cells
Glycolysis takes place as normal
Then pyruvate turns into carbon dioxide and ethanol
