Respiration Flashcards
What are the 7 uses of energy in the body?
- Protein synthesis
- Active transport
- Growth
- Maintaining a constant internal environment
- Nervous transmission
- Muscle contraction
- Cell division
What is respiration?
a series of reaction in the form of using enzymes to obtain energy from molecules at ATP (such as glucose)
What aerobic respiration?
Chemical reactions that use oxygen to break down molecules for energy
What is the word and symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen –> Carbon dioxide + water + energy
C6H12O6 + 6O2 ———> 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
What is anaerobic respiration?
Chemical reactions that break down molecules to release energy without using oxygen
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration?
glucose –> lactic acid + energy
What is the word and symbol equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast?
glucose –> alchohol + carbon dioxide + energy
C6H12O6 -> 2C2H5OH + 2CO2 + ATP
What builds up in muscles during periods of vigorous exercise and how do you remove it?
Lactic acid, you can remove lactic acid through aerobic respiration in the liver
Why are our heart rates increase after exercise?
To move the lactic acid from the blood in our muscles to our liver where we increase the rate of aerobic respiration to remove the lactic acid in the liver
