• look for S&S tht indicates resp problems such as reduced mental alertness, nasal flaring and cyanosis
• look for shape, symmetry and contour of the chest
• note the anteroposterior diameter
• look for deformities, the position of the spine, retraction of the intercostal spaces during inhalation
