Resources Flashcards
Air, water, soil, and energy resources
emissions
gases and particles put into the air
smog
a combination of smoke and fog in cities
acid rain
rain that carries dangerous chemicals from air pollution
examples of technology (air)
catalytic converter, hybrid cars, mass transit, organic farming,
erosion
moving sediment and soil around
runoff
draining water
examples of technology (water)
Farm fertilizers/pesticides in runoff, deforestation that causes erosion, sewage, factory outflow, landfills, animal waste, and oil spills
nutrient depletion
when essential nutrients in soil are depleted
malnutrition
ill health that results from not getting the proper nutrient-rich foods
examples of soil pollution
farming practices, erosion, polluted runoff, lack of crop rotation
examples of technology (soil)
precision agriculture
fossil fuels
fuel from organism that died millions of years ago such as coal, oil, and natural gas
renewable energy
energy that can be renewed, infinite. ex: hydroelectric, air, geothermal
fossil fuel environmental impacts
Negative. May cause many kinds of pollution through leaks/spills or digging.
conservation
using as little as possible, keeping our resources
efficiency
percentage of energy used to do a task and not lost to the environment
examples of energy technology
thaw food in the fridge, use a microwave oven, using lamps instead of overhead lights, unplugging devices when not in use, not wasting hot water, and wearing warm clothes instead of turning up the heat.
