What is wellbeing?
It is the degree or satisfaction that an individual or group experiences when needs are met
What is considered the opposite of wellbeing?
Ill being
What is SPEECS?
It is an acronym that refers to the factors affecting wellbeing. It stands for social, physical, emotional, economical, cultural and spiritual.
What is the social factor and what satisfies it?
Relates to the interactions with others.
- An environment in which social interaction, companionship and friendship can be fostered
- Opportunities for leisure, recreation and relaxation → independent and family.
- Interaction → feeling of being wanted → positive effect on wellbeing
What is the physical factor and what satisfies it?
Relates to physical health and safety.
- Adequate nourishment for growth, development, and good health
- Adequate sleep and rest
- Regular health care
- Regular physical activity
- Safety and security from external hazards and weather
Can physical issues affect other factors and why?
Eating well and feeling physical fit can contribute to our resistance to sickness and our ability to deal with problems that may occur.
What is the emotional factor and what satisfies it?
Relates to our feelings.
- Our feelings are dependent. In many cases our social and emotional factors overlap → Interactions with others
What happens when these needs are met?
When these emotional needs are met it results in resilience and a higher level of coping with stress. (success)
What is the economic factor and what satisfies it?
Related to finances.
These factors are addressed through:
- Paid employment, bank account, credit, budgeting, inheritance, shares or welfare
- Job security
- Increased knowledge and skills
What are the relationships between economic and wellbeing?
Less finance results in lower standard of living → the ability to meet financial needs, poorer housing
What is the cultural factor and what satisfies it?
Focuses on customs, beliefs, values, and traditions. They are satisfied by:
- Developing and teaching the above factors
- Opportunities to maintain your cultural heritage
- Identifying and belonging to a cultural group
What is the spiritual factor and what satisfies it?
Relate to moral or religious areas. This includes:
- Identifying right from wrong
- Understanding religious principles
- Having a purpose in life
What is individual wellbeing?
Ones wellbeing can be made up of the SPEECS
What is group wellbeing?
A person’s wellbeing can affect the wellbeing of others in a group. See example of PRELIM NOTES
What is a need?
Things that are vital to sustain our life. → physical and mental health
What is a want?
Preferences or desires
What is SHEASEAS
An acronym that refers to the needs and wants of individuals. This includes; safety and security, health, education, sense of identity, employment, adequate standard of living.
What is safety and security?
Refers to our desire to feel protected and safe from threat. Protected from exposure to the weather, theft, burglary or physical harm
What is health?
A holistic concept related to a person’s perception of wellbeing
Physical, social emotional, mental and spiritual
Balance of all = positive wellbeing
What does holistic mean?
The concept that everything is interconnected.
What is education?
Refers to the action or process; of acquiring knowledge and skills
- School and tafe, community colleges, universities
How is education important?
Its important because higher education results in higher levels of economic resources.
What is sense of identity?
Is an individual’s idea of who they are, and can influence confidence and self-esteem.
- Shaped by areas of your life; family, work and social
What is employment?
An activity to which one devotes time and requires exerting towards a goal for payment, profit or commission.
- Young students → work → can enhance structures, being organised, routines
- Adults require employment to meet their basic needs and standard of living
What is adequate standard of living?
Refers to primary needs : food, clothing and shelter (PRIMARY) that are required by all people.
- In our society it is usually satisfied within a family setting. Some people require community support
- Food needs to be nutritious so the individual can have optimal health
- Clothing needed to protect us
Shelter → safety and security (In a format of a house)
