resource management Flashcards
how doeses a lack of energy affect quality of life?
energy is used for everything so it is vital
-lack of energy means people have no access to important resources- no jobs, education or healthcare.
e.g. Lagos - has to use generators, which are polluting and loud.
how does a lack of water affect quality of life
water is need to drink, wash, dispose of waste, grow/process food and in jobs and manufacturing.
without clean water, people have to resort to using unclean water which is worse for their health.
e.g. lagos - makoko-drinking sewage water.
how does a lack of food affect quality of life?
many places are malnourished, so have to get their own food or go without.
e.g. makoko -fishing
why is there a link between wealth and energy availability
places in poverty struggle to put in access to energy because there is no funding from lack of taxes and informal jobs.
what strategies are there for increasing food production?
irrigation - supply water to rural farms
new methods - Hydroponics-aeroponics.
–expensive but faster production
how have they inceased production in almeria?
in the last 35 years, they have developed over 26,000 hectares of greenhouses.
$1.5 billion per year income
adv:
-cheap labour.
-less water
-low energy cost.
-packaging jobs
-cheap fruit and veg all year round
-less chemicals used
-new science development
disadv:
-low wages
-illegal immigrants wanting work
-bad for the local environment
-increase little and plastic use
-increase pesticide use
-water sources dry up
-decrease the temp in almeria-reflect sunlight
where is almeria and why is it good for food production?
southeast of spain
-very hot all year round- desert-like
-space only used for filming production previously.
explain sustainable farming
sustainable food production can increase yields but protects land, energy and water resources.
sustainable farming in Bangladesh
practical Action charity- increase food production
-using rice-fish culture – fish added to paddy fields
–natural fertiliser from fish
–fish eat pests
–rice offers protection for the fish
-10% increase in rice yields+ fish supply
why is it better to farm sustainably in the long run?
-protects diversity
-maintains supplies for the future
-more social benefits
