Resonance and Molecular Structure and Polarity Flashcards
What is resonance?
Some molecules can be drawn with the atoms in the same places but electrons in different places.
What are results called from performing resonance?
Resonance Structures or Resonance Forms.
What is the true shape of a molecule/compound?
3-Dimensional Shape
Bonds can be described in terms of what?
Distances (lengths), angles, and relative arrangements in space.
What do Lewis structure not show?
Don’t show 3D geometry.
What does V stand for in VSEPR?
Valence.
What does S stand for in VSEPR?
Shell.
What does EPR stand for in VSEPR?
Electron-Pair Repulsion.
What is VSEPR?
Assumptions that electrons repel each other so they are going to try to be as far as possible in 3D space.
What is an electron-domain?
Regions that contain electrons that can be any type of electrons. (lone pair, single bond, double bond, or triple bond).
2 Electron Domains?
Linear
3 Electron Domains
Trigonal Planar
4 Electron Domains
Tetrahedral
5 Electron Domains
Trigonal Bipyramidal
6 Electron Domains
Octahedral
