Resit Notes Flashcards
1
Q
When a question asks about soil compression, what is it not asking about
A
Dilation and contraction as these are shear phenomena
2
Q
How does soil drainage affect initial compression?
A
Drained soil changes volume with no change in pore water pressure. For undrained the reverse is true
3
Q
Other than drainage condition, what else affects soil compression
A
Permeability
4
Q
In what kind of soil does peak shear stress occur?
A
Dense soils only
5
Q
What do values of the state parameter suggest about the soil?
A
Positive: loose pack soil, negative: dense pack
As state parameter decreases, peak strength increases and the soil becomes more dilative
