Resistors Flashcards
Fixed resistors
Have a fixed or unchangeable value of resistance in ohms
What are the two categories for resistors?
Fixed resistor and variable resistor
Three (3) types of fixed resistors
Composition, film resistor and wire wound resistor
Composition resistor and it’s materials
Commonly used, general purpose resistor. Made of a carbon based alloy together with a binder. Binder holds resistive materials together so formed in cylindrical shape. Wore leads are connected to ends and given protective coating.
Film resistors?
Constructed by forming a thin film of resistive material onto a ceramic glass core, such as nickel-chromium. Core fitted with metal end caps wire leads are attached.
Wire wound resistors?
Constructed by winding a resistance wire around a ceramic core. The wire and the core then surrounded by ceramic or adhesive insulation material.
Variable resistor?
Can have resistance value changed. As you change the position of sliding contact you change the resistance value.
Rheostats
Rheostats is a variable resistor that has two connections points or terminals. One connected to slider contact
Ex time devices, speed, temperature
Potentiometers
Variable resistor with three connection points. Two fixed to ends or resistor and one moving sliding contact wiper
2 variable resistors
Potentiometers and rheostats
Wire-wound resistors
A wirewound resistor is constructed by winding resistance wire around a ceramic core
Variable resistors
Variable resistor can also use a resistive surface made of composition or film instead of wound wire.
Rheostats
Adjusting current limits the amount of current, varies current to load. Two terminal devices
Rheostats
is a variable resistor it has to connection points or terminals one connected to a slider or wiper contact example control of time devices – speed
Potentiometers
A variable resistor that has three connection points or terminals. Two terminals are fixed to The ends of the resistor in the third terminal is connected to a sliding contact sliding contact or wiper along the resistant surface varies their assistance proportionally between to fix terminals
Ratings of fixed resistor
Resistance rating – power rating – tolerance rating
Resistance raiting
There are several ways to find the resistance value of a resistor the resistance value may be directly printed on the resistor
R
R represents the decimal place of the number of ohms for instants are tutu is 0.22
Power rating
The power rating in Watts of a resistor indicates the rate at which the resistor can convert the electrical energy into heat energy without overheating, The larger the current through a resistor is the greater the heat dissipated by resistor
Tolerance rating
The tolerance rating of a resistor is the degree of accuracy of a labeled resistance value. Tolerance rating is given as a percentage example the talent rating of 10% for 5.1 is 5.1 ohms plus or -10%
Colour band
The first digit together with the second did it multiplied by the third plus the percent of the fourth
