Questioning motives
Questioning motives of authority figure to find purpose if actions you are asked to carry out
Doing so finds out if motives are socially beneficial or harmful
Moral Reasoning
Pre-conventional: judging morality by its direct consequences (will I get caught?)
Conventional: understanding norms and conventions needed to maintain a stable society
Post-conventional: basing morals on humanitarian approach, more advanced to moral codes showed high levels of disobedience
Rebellion in groups
Gamson et al (1982) found:
97% of groups will show dissent
50% of groups will completely rebel to unfair requests from authority
..if they are given time to express and discuss their dissent
