Resistance To Social Influence Flashcards
What are the two models that are resistance to social influence
Non conforming models (conformity)
Disobedient models (obedience)
What does a non conforming model do
If someone dlddd in the group agrees with you/ disagrees with the group, you’re less likely to conform
What do disobedient models do
When we’re in the presence of others who disobey an authority figure we are less likely to obey
What is locus of control
a person’s beliefs about how much control they have over what happens to them in their life
Two types of locus of control
Internal locus of control
External locus of control
What do people with an internal locus of control perceive themselves to be
To have great control over their behaviour, being confident, take responsibility for actions
Are people more or less likely to conform/obey if they have an internal locus of control
Less likely to obey/conform
What do people perceive themselves to be if they have an external locus of control
Their behaviour is caused by external influences, take less responsibility for their actions, less confident
Are people more or less likely to conform/obey if they have an external locus of control
More likely to obey/conform
Strength of explanations of resistance to social influence
P:research support for social support in reducing pressure to obey by Milgram (1974)
E: milgrams variation, the real p.t was paired with additional confederates
E: in this variation, the 2 confederate refused to go on. The percentage of real p.t who went to the full 450v dropped from 65% to 10%
L: this shows that real p.t have support for their desire to disobey more likely to resist pressure
Weakness of explanation of resistance to social influence
P:it is difficult to measure whether someone has an internal or external locus of control
E: the test shed is self-report
E: people may lie
L: we can’t be sure that the measurement of locus of control is accurate and if it then has impact on behavior
