what is locus of control ?
the extent of which people believe they have control over their own lives
what will people who have a internal locus of control believe ?
what happens in their life is a result of their own behaviour and they have control over their lives
what will people who have an external locus of control beleive ?
what happens to them is controlled by external factors and they do not have complete control over their life

what did oliner and oliner do and when ?
1998 .They interviewed non Jewish survivors of WWII and compared those who had resisted orders and protected Jewish people with those who had not.
what were oliner and oliner findings ?
406 rescuers who has resisted resisted orders were more likely to have a high internal locus of control ,in comparison to the 126 people who has simply followed orders /
.But it is difficult to conclude that that was the only factor encouraging them to obey and comply
explain Spector .
1983 - used Rotters locus of control scale to determine if locus of control is associated with conformity .
explain Spectors findings ?
from 157 students ,those with a high internal locus of control were less likely to conform then those with a high external locus of control but only in normative social influence .There was no difference in informational social influence

having an ally = no longer fear being ridiculed for point of view =avoid normative social influence

in a variation , one of the confederates were instructed to give the correct answer throughout,rate of conformity dropped to 5.5%
explain Milgram and social support ?
variation -real participant placed with 2 additional confederates ,who also played the role of teachers .The 2 additional confederates refused to go on and withdrew from the experiment early .% of real participants who went to full 450 V dropped from 65% to 10%
