- He wanted to abolish slavery forever.

- During the Kansas campaign, John and his supporters killed 5 pro-slavery Southerners.
- This happened in 1856.

- He tried to start a freedom movement among the slaves in Harpers Ferry Virginia.
- The army got involved and some of his followers and 2 of his sons were killed.
- He was also captured and tried for treason against the state of Virginia.
