Resistance And Circuits Flashcards
Total resistance in series equation
R = R1 + R2 + ….
Total resistance in parallel
1/Rt = 1/R1 + 1/R2 + ….
Potential divider equation
Vout = Vin (R2/(R1+R2))
E =
I(R+r)
V+Ir
EMF
Work done per unit charge on charge carriers transferring energy from chemical to electrical
Internal resistance
Resistance of components inside the battery, which transfers some energy as thermal, heating the battery. The lost volts per unit current
Terminal potential difference
Potential difference across the terminals of a battery
Resistance =
pL/A
Determining the maximum power available from an electrical source procedure
- With no load connected to the cell, measure the terminal potential difference
- Add a single lamp bulb and record the terminal potential difference across the cell and the total current flowing from the cell
- Add additional lamps in parallel and record the terminal p.d. Of the cell and total current from the cell.
What do potential dividers do?
- it can reduce a large voltage to a specific small value
- used to build sensors which vary their resistance depending on the surroundings
Potential divider
A circuit with two resistances connected in series, so that the p.d is shared between the resistors
