Resi Heating Systems And Equipment Flashcards
What is a furnace?
A piece of equipment that transforms fuel into heat energy and distributes that energy through the HVAC system.
Two components that are part of the furnace that help burn fuel?
Gas valves and burner system.
What unit is heat measured in?
BTU (British thermal unit)
BTU is defined as
British thermal unit.
What is the manifold designed to do?
Distribute gas evenly to a number of orifaces to regulate fuel flow.
List the two different types of gas burners.
Inshot burner & Upshot burner.
What is the heating value of natural gas?
1000 BTU/cu ft
What is the heating value of propane?
2500 BTU/ cu ft
What is the heating value of electricity compared to BTUH’s?
1 watt = 3.413 Btuh
What are two different types of oil burners?
Vaporizing or atomizing burners.
Which oil burner is most common?
Atomizing type burner.
List solid fuels.
Wood, coal and wood pellet.
When burning fuel what else is REQUIRED?
Oxygen
Where are the two locations that air is required to burn a fuel in the combustion process?
Combustion chamber & burners
Where is dilution air used?
Draft hood
What does the heat exchanger designed to do?
It separates the air that circulates through the house from the products and combustion.
If there is a flame failure in an older style furnace, what is going to stop the fuel flow?
Pilot light sensor.
What does the cadmium sulfide cell sense?
Senses light and is used as a safety device.
What are the two different types of blowers in a furnace?
Belt driven & direct drive.
What is CW & CCW
Clock wise & counter clock wise
If a furnace is lower than 78% efficient, what would this type of furnace be called?
Low efficient furnace.
If the furnace is between 77-88% efficient this is classified as?
Mid efficient furnace.
What is used in place of a draft hood for oil furnaces?
Barometric damper.
What is used in place of a draft hood when the furnace is over 78% efficient?
Inducer fan or inducer motor.
