Reserach Methods Flashcards
What type of experiment is a True Lab?
Cognitive
What are the characteristics of a True Lab?
extraneous variables are controlled,
controlled environment,
IV is isolated
What are the Limitations of a True Lab?
random allocation,
chance of being assigned to same group,
unnatural behavior that doesnt reflect real life
What are the strengths of a True Lab?
easier to replicate a lab experiment,
control of EV
How are True Labs used?
manipulated the IV so it affects the Dv,
Ev are controlled, (ex: cognition can be the IV)
What type of experiment is Field?
social
What are the characteristics of a Field?
manipulaition of an IV + measure effect of a DV,
naturalistic setting
What are the limitations of a Field?
ethical concerns,
low control for EVS,
difficult to replicate and accurately collect data
What are the strengths of a Field?
egological validity,
reflects real life
How is a Field used?
done in everyday life environment,
manipulates the IV to show change in the DV
Why is a field used?
to produce findings that are more realistic
What type of experiment is a Quasi?
cause and effect
What are the characteristics of a Quasi?
study of an IV on a DV to establish casuality,
doesn’t include randomization
What are the limitations of a Quasi?
not all EVs can be controlled, researcher has 0 control,
analysis can be complicated
What are the strengths of a Quasi?
higher external validity, highercontroledover targeted hypotheses
How are Quasi’s used?
non-random method is used to assign subjects,
to estimate the causal impact of an intervention on the target population without random assignment
Why are Quasi’s used?
studying something specific to the participants,
demonstrate causality between an intervention and outcome
Why are True Labs used?
explains the cognitive process
