Researchers Flashcards
What was Dr. Henry Faulds’s contribution to the study of fingerprints?
One of the first to recognize the persistency of fingerprints. Had students remove their friction ridges using sandpaper, chemicals and other methods and found that they grew back.
What was Sir Francis Galton’s contribution to the study of fingerprints?
- he was the first to name the points of minutiae in fingerprints (bifurcation, ridge endings, islands, lakes, etc.)
- these points have been named after him as, “ Galton Points”
What was Inez Whipple’s contribution to the study of fingerprints?
- noted that all mammals with five digits had the same morphological arrangement of volar pads on the bottoms of the hands and feet
neighbouring ridges had a dielectric affect on the arrangement of friction ridges during their development
What was the name of the paper that Inez Whipple published?
“The Ventral Surfaces of the Mammalian Chiridium”
In simpler terms, what does, “The Ventral Surfaces of the Mammalian Chiridium” mean?
The outer surfaces of the hands and feet of mammals (in this case apes and humans, Inez Whipple)
Ventral = outer surface Chiridium = Hands and/or feet Mammalian = Mammals (apes and humans)
What was Alphonse Bertillion’s contribution to the study of fingerprints?
- conceived the idea of using anatomical measurements to distinguish one criminal from another
- this is referred to as, “Anthropometry” / “Bertillionage”
- 11 measurements, two photos and prints of all 10 fingers
When was the use of the fingerprint system established in Canada and under what legislative sanction?
- July
When was the Canadian “National Fingerprint Bureau” established?
- February 1911 on Wellington St. Directly across from the Parliament buildings
- original files consisted of 2042 sets of fingerprints taken by Edward Foster between 1906 and 1910
What was J.C.A Mayer’s contribution to the study of fingerprints?
- was the first to allude to the uniqueness of friction ridge skin
