Research Methology Flashcards
Definition of Psychology
The scientific study of behaviour and mental processes.
Artifacts
A result of experiments that are not carefully controlle; the result of unforeseen factors in an experiment.
Behaviour
All actions that humans do that is directly observable blah
Mental Processes
Occurings in the brain that cannot be observed such as thinking or memory.
Nomothetic Approach
The use of universal laws to describe the way in which objects throughout the universe behave.
Variable
Any characteristic that is defined and quantified
Operationalization
The act of expressing constructs in terms of observable behaviour.
Construct
Any theoretically defined variable such as love or attention.
Experimental Study
In it’s simplest form is the process of manipulating an independent variable in order to measure change to the dependent variable, whilst controlling any other important variables.
Independent Variable
Variable that is purposefully manipulated by the experimenter.
Dependent Variable
Variable that is expected to change as the IV is manipulated.
Cause-and-effect inference
In quantitave research, infering that manipulating the IV caused a change in the DV.
Correlational Study
In these studies, the researcher does not manipulate any variables, variables the researcher chose are measured and their relationships are quantified
Empirical Evidence
Scientific evidence obtained by careful observation and experimentation.
Falsification
The act of falsifying information or a theory
