Research Methods: Stats Testing Flashcards
This level of measurement is presented in the form of categories
Nominal
This level of measurement can be ranked but does not have fixed intervals.
Ordinal
A researcher gave a questionnaire to her participants to rate their happiness in their marriage on a scale of 1(unhappy) to 4 (happy). What level of measurement is she using and why?
Ordinal
It is based on opinions of whether they thought they have a happy marriage
A researcher asked people whether they were currently on a diet or not on a diet. What level of measurement is this?
Nominal
Why is time considered interval level data?
it is an objective/factual measure which has equal intervals
A research gave participants a standardised IQ test. What level of measurement is this?
Interval (as it is a standardised measure)
A researcher gave participants 20 words to learn. Group one listened to the words whereas the other group read the word. The total number correctly recalled was measured. What level of measurement is this?
Ordinal as there are not equal intervals between scores
What examples of objective measures would be seen as interval level data?
Time, height, weight & standardised measures
Which statistical test should be used?
The Bavarian Institute of Health Exploitation was concerned about the effect of lager drinking on the local population. They studied if there was a difference between drinkers and their IQ. The participants were grouped by IQ (high medium and low) and drinking (drinkers and non-drinker).
Chi-square
Difference - in IQ of drinkers and non-drinkers
Independent - either drinker or non drinker
Nominal - categories of high, medium or low IQ and drinker or non-drinker
Which statistical test should be used?
Some people argue that exposure to cold weather causes the common cold. Researchers tested this supposed link by selecting a sample of school children and developed a scale for how often they played outside (1 represents never and 10 is always joins in). They also developed a scale for the number of colds with 1 representing very few and 5 is very frequently.
Spearman’s Rho
Correlation between playing outside and colds
Ordinal level data - based on opinions
Which stats test would be appropriate?
