research methods - statistics Types of data. Flashcards
What are the types of data
Quantitative, qualitative and primary, secondary
What is the difference between qualitative data and quantitative date
Quantitative data can be converted into graphs and analysed statistically whereas qualitative data is concerned with the interpretation of language.
Quantitative data is data that is expressed in words
true or false
false, data is expressed numerically
What is qualitative data expressed in
words, descriptive data.
How is Quantitative data gained
IT can be gained through individual scores such as the number of words recalled (ordinal), the number of words recalled in seconds (interval) or from self reports methods and the use of close questions.
How is qualitative data gained
may take the form a written description of the thoughts, feelings and opinions of participants such as from a notes recorded within an interview, a diary entry or answers from open questions in a questionnaire
Strength of quantitative data
- simple to analyse which allows comparison and trends to be established
weakness of quantitative data
- lacks depth and meaning to behaviour especially when its complex
Strengths of qualitative
- rich detail and depth
weaknesses of qualitative
- difficult to analyse and to summarise statistically to establish patterns or trends.
write a peel of strength of quantitative
Quantitative data is easier to analyse and compare between groups, allowing for the identification of patterns and trends. This helps draw conclusions about behaviour (e.g., consumer habits, employee productivity). On the other hand, qualitative data, being more wordy, is harder to summarize statistically, making it difficult to compare within the data.
write a peel of weaknesses of quantitative
Quantitative data may lack depth in understanding complex behaviours, hindering participants from fully expressing their thoughts, feelings, and opinions on the subject (e.g., consumer preferences in a market study). This limitation reduces the internal validity of the data. In contrast, qualitative data offers rich detail, enabling a deeper understanding of human behaviour.
What is primary data
Is data collected by the participants first hand and is specific to the aims of the study.
What is secondary data
Data that is collected from a third party, is not specific to the aims of the study and then used by the researcher.
Weaknesses of primary data
- it requires time and effort to obtain data and analyse the findings
