Research Methods Flashcards
What is electrooculography?
eye movement investigation tool
what is cerebral angiography?
uses the infusion of a radio-opaque dye into a cerebral artery to visualise the circulatory system
what is polygraphy?
method of interrogation that employs the ANS indexes of emotion to infer the truthfulness of a person
what is electromyography (EMG)?
measures muscles tension
what is exteroceptive vs interoceptive stimuli?
external, public stimuli vs internal private stimuli
what is the result of measuring eye movement?
EOG
what is x-ray computed tomography?
used to visualise the brain
what is MRI
high res images, colour coded and high spatial res
what is fMRI?
uses BOLD signal, better spatial res but poor temporal res
what is PET?
functional images and use of radioactive substance
How would you identify pathways which water diffuses?
diffusion tensor imaging
How would you tur off an area of the cortex?
by creating a magnetic field under a coil during transcranial magnetic stimulation
What is scalp EEG?
measures electrical activity on brain
what is MEG?
measures change in magnetic fields but can only record close to the scalp
what is a BREGMA?
an atlas for stereotaxic procedures
What is an aspiration lesion?
an lesion to cortical tissues accessible to the eyes
How would you do an aspiration lesion?
by suction
What is radio-frequency lesions?
small subcortical lesions passing current to target tissues
What is the 2DG technique?
similar to glucose. the subject is killed and brain is sliced then subjected to an autoradiography
What is cerebral Dialysis?
implanting a fine tube with a small permeable bits. Freezing the brain then doing a chromatograph
What is immunocytochemistry?
a way of locating proteins by placing in a foreign protein so body creates antibodies
what is in situ hybridization?
a way of locating peptides (RNA) with radioactive material
