Research Methods Flashcards
Validity?
Whether something relates to the hypothesis.
Ecological Validity?
The methods, materials and setting of the study must apply to the real world being examined.
Repeated Measures?
Each individual participant is exposed to the same condition of the experiment.
Independent Measures?
Type of method used during a experiment that involves 2 or more separate groups.
Matched Pairs?
Matched in terms of certain characteristics. (Age, gender)
Counter Balancing?
Experimental design in which all possible order of presenting the variables are included.
Order Effects?
When results are affected by the participant practicing.
Extraneous Variables?
Undesirable variables that influence the relationship between the variables.
Situational Variables?
How the situation can affect the experiments effects. ( background noise &a silence)
Participant Variables?
How the participant can affect the experiments results. (Participants emotions)
Independent Variables?
What you manipulate in a experiment.
Dependent Variables?
What you are measuring in an experiment.
Generalisability?
Whether you can generalise the results to a wider population.
Application?
How it can be applied to real life.
Ethical Guidelines?
A set of guidelines that must be followed in order to protect the participants.
Measures of Central Tendency?
Ways of figuring out an average for quantitive data. (Mean, mode and median)
Operationalise?
To make the hypothesis precise so that it is testable.
Null Hypothesis?
States that there is no relationship between the variables being studied.
Directional Hypothesis?
Saying that one will be better than the other.
‘Boys will do significantly worse than girls’
Non-directional Hypothesis?
Saying there will be a difference.
‘There will be a difference in scores between girls and boys’
Nominal Data?
Tallies
Ordinal Data?
Put in order, ranking scale.
Interval Data?
Distinct scale, time.
Reliability?
Whether the experiment can be replicated, consistency.
