Research Methods Flashcards
What is the independent variable?
The variable that we change and manipulate.
What is reliability?
If the experiment was repeated, we would expect the same results therefore making it a reliable. Consistency over time.
What is an extraneous variable?
The variable that is an external factor that can influence an experiment. (E.g - noise)
Name the three types of sampling.
Random
Opportunity
Volunteer
What is a closed question?
A question which has fixed responses such as yes or no.
What is a non directional hypothesis?
A hypothesis which does not indicate an possible result for the experiment. E.g - there will be a relationship found between coffee drinkers and energy.
What are demand characteristics?
Demand characteristics are developed by participants if they are aware of conditions in the experiment which may make them bias.
What is a random sample?
A random sample is a sample taken from a random group of people who have no obvious bias’ to them. E.g - taking people’s names out of a hat.
What is a pilot study?
A study done before the actual study to determine any possible issues with the experiment.
What is ecological validity?
How relatable the study is to a real life situation. Lab experiments have very little of this.
Name the three experimental designs.
Repeated measures
Independent groups
Matched pairs
What are order effects?
Effects which impact the experiment.
What is an overt observation?
The participants know that they are being observed.
What is inter-rater reliability?
Where two psychologists repeat the study and compare results to see the overall reliability.
What is social desirability?
How desirable the study was for the participants to manipulate it.
