Research Methods Flashcards
Confounding Variables
Statistical model that correlates with both the dependent and independent variables
Cause and Effect
when something is the consequence of the happening of something
Hypothesis
A educated theory without proof
External Validity
how much you can generalize
Internal Validity
The credibility of the results. How believable they are.
Ecological Validity
how artificial is the experiment setting- how someone would behave in real life
Confirmability
The degree in which the results can be confirmed or corroborated by others
Reliability
how much people can actually rely on the results. These are measured by the overall consistency of a measure.
Quantitative Research
Information is numerical (experiments or surveys)
Data analysis is in the form of statistics (eg. mean, standard deviation, or percentages)
Qualitative Research
Information is in the meaning of the data (eg. diary entries or interview data)
Data analysis is in the form of interpretation of the data to see what the data reveals
Empirical Research Study
Activity that includes an organized collection and analysis of empirical data.
The researcher decides on the methodology for data collection (quantitative or qualitative methods)
