research methods Flashcards
independent variable
the thing that is varied in an experiment.
dependant variable
the thing that the researcher measures in an investigation
hypothesis
a clear precise, testable statement that is written at the beginning of an investigation. it states the relationship between the variables being investigated.
variable
anything that can vary or change within an investigation
null hypothesis
a statement of no-relationship (correlation or difference) between variables.
extraneous variable
any variable apart from the independent variable which could have an effect on the dependent variable. if extraneous variables are not controlled, this means that the researcher can not know what really happened to change the dependent variable
alternative hypothesis
states a relationship (correlation or differentiation) between variables. it is alternative to the null hypothesis
