Research Methods Flashcards
Ethical issues are conflict between?
Researcher’s needs and Participant’s rights
Ethics
Ethics are a set of morals. These aren’t absolute, however, any group of people need to determine what is right or wrong to judge whether a behavior is acceptable or not. This is where these ethical guidelines come into play.
Ethical issues
refers to conflicts about what is acceptable. Everyone conducting psychological research should be aware of their responsibility to treat the ppts in an ethically appropriate manner. Whenever you conduct psychological research you must ensure that you deal properly with all ethical issues.

DR PIP C stands for?
- Deception
- Right to withdraw
- Privacy
- Informed Consent
- Protection from psychological and physical harm
- Confidentiality
Informed Consent
includes telling ppts about the aims, procedures, risks and benefits of the research so they can make an informed decision about their participation.
Revealing the aim of a study can lead to demand characteristics which can decrease the validity of a research.
Confidentiality
Under the Data protection act ppts can control informations about themselves.
Personal data should be recorded in a way that ppts are not identifiable.
Privacy
Is about personal space. All ppts have the right to privacy. Researchers understand this and so know not to invade a ppt’s mind.
This means ppts can only be observed in public places.
Deception
Delibrately misleading or not fully informing the ppts about the full aim of a study in order tp avoid demand characterisitcs and increase validity, however, this could cause ppts psychological harm.
Right to withdraw
Ppts should be free to decide whether or not they want to take part in a study.
Ppts can decide to leave halfway or at the end of the study as well and still get their incentive.
A problem with this is that your sample may become biased as people who choose to stay may be more compliant or hardy.
Protection from psychological and physical harm.
Ppts must not be put in a situation where they could be physically or mentally harmed.
A research is acceptable if ppts are no more in harms way then they would be in their everday life and if they leave in the same condition they came in.
