research methods Flashcards
what is a lab experiment?
takes place in a highly controlled envrionment doesnt have to be in a lab
A03:
strengths:
- high level of control of the IV and extraneous variables so we can determine cause and effect
- high internal validity
- high replicability
weaknesses:
- artificial so it lacks ecological validity and mundane realism
- low external validty
- risk of demand charateristics
what is a field experiment?
takes place in a more everyday setting but the IV is still manipulated
A03:
strengths:
- high mundane realism/eco validity
- high external validty
weaknesses:
- difficult to replicate
- less control on EV
- low internal validity
- ethics: consent/privacy
what is a natural experiment?
the IV naturally occurs and not manipulated by the researcher it can be condicted in a lab or field setting
A03:
strengths:
- can be useful for situatuons where IV cannot be manipulated
- high mundane/eco validty
weaknesses:
