Research Methods Flashcards
What’s opportunity sampling?
Selecting anyone willing and available at the time.
What’s random sampling?
All members of the public have an equal chance of being selected.
What’s systematic sampling?
The sample reflects the proportion of people in certain subgroups within the population.
What’s volunteer sampling?
Participants self-select themselves to be involved.
What’s a confounding variable?
A kind of extraneous variable which has an effect on the results.
What’s an extraneous variable?
Any variable that may affect the dependent variable.
What’s demand characteristics?
A clue from the researcher that may make the participant act differently.
What’s social desirability bias?
Participates act like their ideas of socially acceptable.
What’s random allocation?
Which participants goes to which condition e.g random name generator.
What’s counter balancing for?
To control order effects.
What’s order effects?
Participants may get better or worse because of how many times it was repeated.
Whats an experimental hypothesis?
Establishes the cause and effects.
What’s a directional hypothesis?
It states the direction or relationship.
What’s independent group design?
Different participants are used in each condition.
What’s pair design?
A pair of participants are first matched on some variable and then split, results are compared.
