Research Methods Flashcards
What data from closed questions
Quantitative
What data from open questions
Qualitative
Social desirabliltiy
When respondent picks answer that exhibits them in more favourable light.
Question construction
Shouldn’t be too technical or ambiguous.
Avoid leading questions
Tests retest (external reliability)
People given same questionaire to complete again in a different occasion.
If responses are similar there is external reliability
Split half (internal)
Split questions into halves and compare findings. If measuring dame concept both halves should have same score
Structured interview
All pps asked same closed questions.
Gather quantitative data
Unstructured interview
Gathers qualitative data.
Interviewer needs to be analytical during interview. Open ended questions.
Semi structured interview
More conversational and dynamic. Tear her has questions to ask but not in order. Gathers qualitative and quantitative
Researcher effects
Characteristics of interviewer influence the respondent and lead to socially desirable answers.
Self report embarrassment
Pps embarrassed to say their answers or think their not appropriate
Random sampling
Every money of target has equal chance as random generator used.
No bias.
Takes time
Stratified sampling
Proportional representation of target population which is broken down into smaller groups called strata.
Very representative
Time consuming and difficult
Opportunity sampling
Use pps available at the time.
Easy and ethical as consent.
Less representative
Volunteer sampling
Pps put themselves forward
Pps would be very motivated.
Could be biased
