Q
The features and Principles of the Scientific Approach (EROTHFA)
A
- Empirical methods - Research which is conducted through direct experience. We cannot create knowledge based on belief alone.
- Replicability - The ability to conduct research again and achieve consistent results. People should get similar findings and make the same conclusions.
- Objectivity - To make observations without bias. Quantitative usually. Done by doing double blind studies, clearly defined IVs and DVs.
- Role of theory - Explains observable behaviours and events using an intergrated set of principles.
- Hypotheses testing - Creating hypotheses and then generating theories
Falsification - For research to be considered scientific it should be falsifiable. Popper ‘theory should be falsifiable’
A Paradigm - Shared assumptions and methods within a particular discipline. Pre-science = psychology.
