Research Methods Flashcards
Independent groups
Separate groups of people for each condition
Repeated measures
Same group of participants for each condition
Matched pairs
Separate groups for each condition - groups matched on certain characteristics
Strength of independent groups
🦤 no order effects
🦤 no fatigue
Weaknesses of independent groups
🦤 risk of participant variables
🦤 2x as many people needed - time consuming and expensive
Strengths of repeated measures
🌱 no participant variables
🌱 fewer people needed
🌱 can be counterbalanced
Weaknesses of repeated measure s
🌱 order effects - fatigue and practice effects
Strengths of matched pairs design
- controls order effects
- reduces risk of participant variable
Weaknesses of matched pairs
Takes more time and effort - matching is a complex process
Still a chance of participant variables
Independent variable
The variable that is manipulated by the researcher
Dependent variable
The variable that is being measured - the results
Extraneous variables
Variables that are not the independent variable, but also affect the dependent variable
Confounding extraneous variables
Variables that the researcher cannot control - these affect the dependent variable
Operationalization of variables
Adding a numerical value to the hypothesis - something that can be used in a comparison
Lab experiments
Experiments that offer the researcher the highest level of control.
