Research Methods 1-4 Flashcards
Dependent Variable
The variable that is measured
Independent Variable
The variable that is manipulated to determine its effect on the dependent variable
Extraneous Variables
Variables that CAN affect the Dependent variable other than the Independent variable
Confounding Variables
The variables other than the independent variables that HAVE affected the dependent variable
Operationalise
How you measure a variable and define it
Laboratory Experiments
Carried out in a Controlled environment where there is a lack of extraneous variables. It is an artificial setting
Field experiment
Carried out in a natural setting and only the independent variable is manipulated
Natural Experiments
Naturally occurring independent variable and then see the effect on the dependent variable
Quasi Experiment
A naturally occurring independent variable which is a difference between people
Laboratory Experiments A/D
A - High level of control over the IV and easy to control the Extraneous variables
A - Researcher can measure the IV and cause and effect can be established
D - Demand characteristics may occur in lab settings meaning behaviours show more than what they would normally be
D - Lack of mundane realism and lack of ecological validity
Field Experiment A/D
A - Mundane realism and ecological validity
A - Researcher can manipulate the IV
D - Less control over EV
D - Difficult to replicate
