Research Method Key Terms Flashcards
Dependant variable
What the researcher measures to see if the manipulation to the independent variable has had an effect.
Independant variable
The variable that has been changed (manipulated by the researcher).
Hypothesis
A prediction about what is going to happen in an experiment or piece of research.
Null hypothesis
A prediction tat states that no relationship exists between the independent variable and the dependent variable other than that which might happen by chance.
Alternative hypothesis
Predicts the difference you expect to find in the dependent variable when the independent variable is manipulated.
Standardised procedures
In order for the experiment to work successfully, it needs to be set up in the same way each time. This will ensure all participants have the same experience. This will help us avoid other external factors that could affect the results.
Reliability
How consistent a study or measuring device is in producing the same results.
Validity
The extent to which research results show a true picture of what is being studied.
Representative sample:
A sample that mirrors society at large. For example, in terms of age, social class, sex and ethnicity.
Generalisable
The extent to which research findings can be applied to settings or populations other than that in which they were originally tested.
Subjective
Results of a study are based on your own opinion and interpretation.
Objective
Results of a study are free from bias, and based on fact.
