Research Method Flashcards
What is an aim?
A general statement of what the researcher intends to investigate.
The purpose of the study.
What is the independent variable?
The aspect or situation that is manipulated or changes affecting the DV which can then be measured.
What is the dependant variable?
The variable measured by the researcher. It is caused by the change in IV.
What are the types of experimental design?
Independent group design
Repeated measures
Matched pairs
What is matched pairs?
Participants are paired together on a variable that may affect the DV of the study. Then, one member of each pair is assigned to condition A and the other to condition B.
What is repeated measures?
When all participants take part in all conditions of the experiment. The data is then compared to see a difference.
What is independent groups?
Two separate groups of participants experience two different conditions of the experiment.
Standardisation
Using the exact same formalised procedures and instructions for participants in the research study.
Randomisation.
The use of chance in order to control for the effects of bias in the experiment.
Demand characteristics.
Anything from the researcher or its situation that can be interpreted by partisan as revealing the true purpose of the experiment. This may lead to participants changing their behaviour as a result.
