Research Design : Descriptive Designs Flashcards
Inductive Reasoning
coming up with ideas based on observations
Deductive Reasoning
testing your ideas
Cross-sectional
A study in which data is collected from multiple people (or a specific group of people) at one time
- easier, faster, cheaper
Longitudinal
A study in which data is repeatedly collected from the same people over an extended period of time
- time consuming, cost more, drop out parts
Case study
A type of study in where a description of an individual or small group of people is given
- consist of interviews/ observations
- Typically done to study rare or unusual conditions
- Can inspire later hypotheses
Observational Studies
yield both qualitative and quantitative information
- focus on multiple ppl
- may take time to see certain behaviors
Naturalistic observation
Observational research study in which behaviors are observed in their natural setting
- mostly qualitative results
Systematic observation
Observational research study in which one or more specific variables, usually made in a precisely defined setting
- mostly quantitative results
- may miss interesting or important behaviors
Observer Bias
wanting to yield observations that you want to be part of the results
Coding System
A way of categorizing behaviors determined BEFORE the observations take place
