Research Design Flashcards
What are the 5 characteristics of research?
- systematic
- logical
- empirical
- reductive
- replicable
What is the research process?
Review literature, make questions, design, collect, interpret, publish
What is reductionism?
Reducing things down to simple concepts, low external validity, high internal validity.
Basic= more reductionist, laboratory based, invasive
Applied= integrative, more about whole system
What is n in sampling?
The sample population
What is N in sampling?
The target population
Random sampling
No bias
Stage sampling
Process is split up into stages eg country, county, town etc
Systematic sampling
Every nth person from a random start point
Stratified sampling
Include strata- subgroups representative of population
Cluster sampling
Taking a naturally formed group eg sports science class
Opportunity sampling
The people available
Analytical research
- reviews- critique evidence, meta analyses
- historical- accessing past records and documenting events
- **philosophical*- organising evidence, synthesising theory
Descriptive research
- case study- study an individual
- **survey*b- cross sectional (single time point), longitudinal (multiple), correlational
Experimental research
Pre designs (1 shot study), quasi designs (time series), true designs (matched pairs etc), stats designs
Variables
IV= cause
DV= measurement
Extraneous= effects but can be controlled
Confounding= can’t
