Research Flashcards
The measure of central tendency characterized by being the most frequently occurring score in a distribution.
Mode
Developed by Galton, the measure of central tendency characterized by being the middle score in a distribution in that half the scores are above it and half below.
Median
The measure of central tendency characterized by being in the middle in that deviations above this value are exactly matched by deviations below. It is computed as the arithmetic average of a distribution, obtained by adding the scores and then dividing by the number of scores.
Mean
This is a computed measure of how much a typical score differs from the mean score. this is useful for know the dispersion of values in a given situation.
Standard deviation
This is the square of the standard deviation, and provides an alternative expression for the dispersion of a set of number. It is central to the Analysis of Variance, ANOVA, a procedure frequently used in psychology for simultaneously comparing a collection of groups.
Variance
Developed by Galton, a statistical measure of the extent to which two factors vary together, and thus of how well either factor predicts the other. Most research in psychology utilizes this term. A major weakness of such research is that this term does not establish causation.
Correlation
