Q
What is the process for Required Practical 8: Ripple Tank?
A
- Set up the apparatus. Set up a ripple tank. It has a shallow tray of water. In the water is a vibrating bar. The bar is connected to a power pack. When the bar vibrates it creates waves. Above the tank we have a lamp and below we have a white piece of paper. When light shines through the paper it produces an image of the waves on the paper.
- We are going the measure the wavelength, frequency and speed of the water waves. The easiest way to do this is recording on a mobile phone. This allows us to slow down the video or freeze it.
- To measure wavelength: we place a ruler on the paper then freeze the image of the waves. We measure the distance of one wave and 10 waves further. In other words, the total 10 wavelengths.
To find one wave length we divide it by 10. - To measure frequency: Place a timer next to the paper and count the number of waves passing a point per second. Once we found it we do the amount of waves divided by the time which will equal frequency which is m/s
- To measure speed: We already know the wavelength and frequency. We then multiply them to have the wave speed which can be measure in m/s
