Required Practicles Flashcards
Making soluble salts using an insoluble base
1) pick right acid and insoluble base such as copper chloride and hydrochloride acid
2) warm dilute acid using Bunsen burner and turn off
3) add insoluble base to acid a bit at a time until not more reacts
4) filter out excess solid to get salt solution
5) to get pure solid crystals of salt gently heat solution using water bath to evaporate some of water and stop heating it and leave solution to cool and crystals will form which can be filtered out an dried
Gaseous products
Chlorine bleaches damp litmus paper
Hydrogen makes a squeaky pop with a lighted splint
Oxygen will relight a glowing splint
Energy transfer measure
1) 25cm3 or 0.25 mol/dm3 of hydrochloride acid and sodium hydroxide in separate beakers
2) place beakers in water bath at 25 degrees until both same temp
3) add HCL and NaOH to polystyrene cup with kid
4) take temp of mixture every 30 seconds and record the highest temperature
5) repeat steps 1-4 using 0.5 mol/dm3 and then 1 mol/dm3 of HCL
